Former baseball pitcher turned NYPD officer dies on the way to the 9/11 memorial

Anthony Varvaro, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, died in a car crash while on his way to work at the 9/11 memorial service. Varvaro, a Staten Island native and a father of four who retired from baseball in 2016 to become a police officer, was driving his Nissan Maxima when he was struck head-on by a Toyota Rav. The accident occurred around 4.25 am on Sunday, near Exit 14-C in Jersy City, New Jersey. Varvaro played as a relief pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, and Boston Red Sox. He was on his way to work at the commemoration of the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks at the World Trade Centre when he was killed. Port Authority police superintendent Edward Cetnar expressed his condolences, and the Staten Island Baseball Oldtimers described Varvaro as “a true gentleman and great family man”.
