Charlie Kirk Criticized for Controversial Tweet about Damar Hamlin Conspiracy

Charlie Kirk, a conservative talk show host, has received criticism for spreading an anti-vaccine conspiracy theory on social media after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed during a game against Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. The 24-year-old athlete suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after being administered CPR and a defibrillator. While fans waited outside the hospital praying for his speedy recovery, some seized the opportunity to suggest that a vaccine may have been the reason behind Hamlin’s collapse. Despite offering his prayers for Hamlin’s recovery in a previous tweet, Kirk propagated the conspiracy theory and commented that “athletes dropping suddenly” is a common sight now. This is not the first time that Kirk has sparked controversy as he falsely speculated that more people have died after taking the Covid-19 vaccine than from coronavirus. Outgoing Republican member of Congress, Adam Kinzinger, called Kirk “the biggest piece of human garbage that can possibly exist right now” and added that his actions were “straight up heartless, cold, evil.” Meanwhile, Buffalo Bills stated that Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit and is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.
