South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer has publicly apologised after he was caught on camera shouting at a group of female athletes during a game on Saturday. The athletes were being honoured for the 50th anniversary of the Title IX legislation, which prohibits sex discrimination at federally supported educational institutions and has been integral in supporting women’s athletics across the US. In footage from the game, Beamer can be heard screaming “Get off the field!” at the women as they leave. Beamer later claimed that he had been instructed by game officials to have his team ready and on the field immediately after TV timeouts and explained that he supports women’s sports. “I hope people know me well enough to know what an advocate I am for women’s sports”, he said.
