During Eddie Alvarez’s bare-knuckle boxing debut on Saturday, his former UFC rival, Conor McGregor, could be heard yelling advice from the crowd. Alvarez went on to win the fight in a split decision against another former McGregor opponent, Chad Mendes, after a brutal bout in which both fighters were knocked down. In the fight, McGregor directed Alvarez to throw an uppercut, and Alvarez followed through, landing the punch moments later. The 39-year-old Alvarez acknowledged McGregor’s advice by pointing at him. McGregor had previously knocked out Alvarez in 2016 to become the UFC’s first-ever dual-weight champion and won the interim featherweight title and undisputed champion titles by defeating Mendes and Jose Aldo in 2015, respectively. Following the fight, Mendes also announced his retirement from combat sports.
