The coach of Israel Adesanya has revealed that he was nervous during the fighter’s walkout at UFC 287. Adesanya went on to knock out Alex Pereira in the second round of the main event, winning back the middleweight title that he lost to his old rival in November. Pereira had previously beaten Adesanya twice in kickboxing, including a knockout, before the pair transitioned into MMA. Speaking to The MMA Hour, Eugene Bareman admitted that Adesanya’s behavior during his walkout was uncharacteristic and made him worried. However, once the two locked eyes and had a mutual agreement, they were able to move on. Bareman said that Adesanya had been excited about the fight, and that they knew they had to take more risks in order to win. He reminded Adesanya that the game is one of intelligence, and that he needed to stay clear-minded and focused, rather than giving in to his animal instincts.
