Strong Form in Madrid Continues as Carlos Alcaraz Makes a Comeback

Carlos Alcaraz, ranked World No 2, rallied to secure his place in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open after defeating Karen Khachanov in a second-set comeback. After winning last week’s Barcelona title, Alcaraz aims for the successive ATP Tour titles. The 19-year-old Spaniard took the opening set against 10th seed Khachanov with a single break in the seventh game. Alcaraz recovered from 5-2 down to win the second set, completing a 6-4, 7-5 victory. “Winning this match gives me a lot of confidence,” Alcaraz said. Veronika Kudermetova progressed to the WTA quarter-finals after defeating third seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, scoring her seventh career win over a top-five ranked player. Kudermetova, the 12th-seeded Russian, topped last year’s finalist, the American world number three, in over two hours. “I feel so happy and proud of myself because every match I played three sets,” Kudermetova said.
