Emma Raducanu was defeated in the first round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart by Jelena Ostapenko, who comfortably beat her in under an hour. The British No 1, who was struggling with a wrist injury, was no match for the 2017 French Open winner, who won 6-2, 6-1 in just 59 minutes on the clay court, setting up a second-round match with third seed Ons Jabeur. While both players held serve at the beginning, Ostapenko’s power and forehand gave her the upper hand, and she eventually broke Raducanu’s serve. Despite Raducanu’s initial lead in the second set, Ostapenko won 16 successive points to go up 4-1, and the US Open winner was unable to stop her opponent’s momentum. Ultimately, Ostapenko won the match point with ease, leaving Raducanu out of the competition.
