Defeat to Jannik Sinner in Miami Open semis costs Carlos Alcaraz his world No. 1 spot.

Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has defeated Carlos Alcaraz to make it to the final of the Miami Open and end the Spaniard’s brief rise to the top spot in the world rankings. Alcaraz had overtaken Novak Djokovic after winning in Indian Wells two weeks ago, but needed to successfully defend his title in Florida to retain his position, which he failed to do. In their previous encounter during the semi-finals at Indian Wells, Alcaraz had defeated Sinner. However, Sinner turned the tables on him in their latest match, winning 6-7 (4) 6-4 6-2. The two tennis players have shared six encounters in total, with Alcaraz winning three times and Sinner winning three times. Sinner will now face Daniil Medvedev in the final, who he has faced five times before, losing on all occasions. Meanwhile, in the women’s event, Petra Kvitova fought back from an early deficit to beat Sorana Cirstea in straight sets and reach the Miami final for the first time, where she will face Elena Rybakina.
