In September, the AO Arena in Manchester will host a Davis Cup Finals group stage tournament. Great Britain, led by captain Leon Smith, will take on three other countries from September 12-17, with the draw set to take place on Wednesday. The Lawn Tennis Association has made it a priority to host major tennis events in different parts of the UK, and next month’s Billie Jean King Cup play-off against France will take place in Coventry. Britain signed a multi-year deal with Gerard Pique’s Kosmos Group, who took over the Davis Cup in 2018, to host a group stage. Despite the lucrative deal’s collapse, the contract is continuing with the International Tennis Federation. The agreement stipulated that Britain qualified for the group stages, which they did by defeating Colombia 3-1 away in February. The 2015 champions’ aim to perform better on home soil than in the previous year, where defeats against the USA and the Netherlands in Glasgow saw them fail to reach the knockout competition. Four groups of nations play across different countries, with the top two in each group advancing to a six-day shoot-out in Malaga in November.
