Ogbene and Browne Compete for Spot in Ireland’s Euro 2024 Matches

  1. Republic of Ireland’s Chiedozie Ogbene and Alan Browne are in a race against time to be fit for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Greece and Gibraltar in June. Ogbene is recovering from a hamstring injury that he sustained during Rotherham’s 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in May, while Browne is rehabilitating from medial ligament damage that he picked up at QPR on April 7. The squad will be finalized soon after an EFL and League of Ireland-based players training camp in Bristol.

Both players have been crucial to Ireland’s performance in recent matches, with Ogbene starting their Group B opener against World Cup finalists France in March. The team requires maximum points from the forthcoming games against Greece and Gibraltar if they want to secure a favorable position in the group, which also has the Netherlands. Even though Ireland showed resilience against France, the task ahead could be daunting, particularly with Greece having topped their group in Nations League C.

Ireland will spend nine days acclimatizing in Turkey before heading to Athens to face Greece on June 16 and Gibraltar in Dublin on June 19. Manager Stephen Kenny is optimistic about their preparations and hopes that players with injury difficulties like Ogbene and Browne will recover in time for the qualifiers.
