Mississippi Governor, Tate Reeves, claims to have kept his promises of tax cuts, increased teacher pay, and job creation during one of his first large-scale campaign events with supporters. He attributes Mississippi’s ability to compete with larger states to his decision not to impose harsh restrictions on businesses during the pandemic. Reeves took a jab at Democratic-led states such as New York, California, and Illinois by saying, “Mississippi is coming to take your jobs. And we have no intention of ever giving them back.” His remarks were met with cheers from over 200 supporters at an event held at a construction equipment dealership in the Jackson suburb of Richland. Reeves is seeking a second term as Governor, and he made no mention of his two challengers for the Republican primary. Mississippians will elect a new governor on November 7, with Democrat Brandon Presley, who serves as Public Service Commissioner, representing northern Mississippi, being the major rival to Reeves. Democrats have not had a governor in Mississippi since 1999, with Republicans holding all the statewide offices and supermajorities in the House and Senate.
