DeSantis Staffer Expresses Uncertainty Regarding American Flag’s History Following Campaign Teaser Video

  1. Florida’s first lady, Casey DeSantis, tweeted a campaign-style video of Governor Ron DeSantis touching an American flag, with the caption “America is worth the fight… Every. Single. Time”, as a teaser for his campaign announcement. However, the positioning of the flag in the video stirred up discussion on online etiquette and history of the American flag. One of DeSantis’ campaign aides, Christina Pushaw, was criticized for her response to Donald Trump adviser Chris LaCivita’s tweet, which stated that if the flag were to be used as a backdrop, it should be positioned correctly. Pushaw argued that it was in the correct position since DeSantis was standing behind it. However, Pushaw’s ignorance of the 15-star flag, which inspired the Star-Spangled Banner, was pointed out. Moreover, the flag of Liberia, with its one star representing the country’s status as the first independent republic on the African continent, was also wrongly referred to by Pushaw. The DeSantis campaign has not commented on the issue yet.
