A north Phoenix hiker murder case has been solved following the arrest of a suspect by Arizona police. Lauren Heike, a 29-year-old esthetician, was found dead on a desert hiking trail with her body displaying signs of “trauma”. The day after she went out to exercise, her body was discovered in the north Phoenix desert. Police released a video of a person of interest, who they describe as a man in his early 20s, before the arrest was made. The suspect was detained at his apartment complex, but his identity has not been released. Amber Winter, a witness, said on local news Fox10 that approximately three SWAT trucks, 15 undercover vehicles, and over a dozen officers arrived to arrest the man.
Heike’s parents spoke to the media following the tragic event. Her mother, Lana, described the situation as “horrific,” adding “as hard as this is for us, we’re grateful because we had such a beautiful child.” The victim’s father, Jeff, expressed his grief, stating: “She was my little girl, and I’m going to miss her terribly. I just hope they can find whoever did this to her.” According to the Phoenix Homicide Lt James Hester, Heike was attacked from behind as she hiked, and the injuries she sustained caused her death. A blurry video of the suspect, which aided in the arrest, was released on May 2.
