The 10th bankruptcy of Sharirasthana of Sushruta Samhita is called as Garbhiņi Vyäkaraņa Shariram Adhyaya. This bankruptcy offers with the Regimen of the Pregnant Woman.
अथातोगर्भिणीव्याकरणंशारीरंव्याख्यास्यामः॥१॥

Garbhiņīcaryā- habits of the pregnant lady
गर्भिणीप्रथमदिवसात्प्रभृतिनित्यंप्रहृष्टाशुच्यलङ्कृताशुक्लवसनाशान्तिमङ्गलदेवताब्राह्मणगुरुपराचभवेत्,मलिनविकृतहीनगात्राणिनस्पृशेत्,दुर्गन्धदुर्दर्शनानिपरिहरेत्उद्वेजनीयाश्चकथाः,शुष्कंपर्युषितंकुथितंक्लिन्नंचान्नंनोपभुञ्जीत,बहिर्निष्क्रमणंशून्यागारचैत्यश्मशानवृक्षाश्रयान्क्रोधमयशस्करांश्चभावानुच्चैर्भाष्यादिकंचपरिहरेद्यानिचगर्भंव्यापादयन्ति,नचाभीक्ष्णंतैलाभ्यङ्गोत्सादनादीनिसेवेत,नचायासयेच्छरीरं,पूर्वोक्तानिचपरिहरेत्,शयनासनंमृतास्तरणंनात्युच्चमपाश्रयोपेतमसंबाधंचविदध्यात्,हृद्यंद्रवमधुरप्रायंस्निग्धंदीपनीयसंस्कृतंचभोजनंभोजयेत्,सामान्यमेतदाप्रसवात्॥३॥

– Be glad at all times
– Maintain cleanliness
– Get decorated with gem stones and jewels
– Wear white garments
– Perform propitiatory rites and auspicious actions,
– Should stay devoted against Gods, Brahmanas and preceptors,
– Should steer clear of grimy, bizarre and despised issues and must by no means contact them,
– Keep clear of odours and seeing issues which can be unsightly
She must additionally prevent–
– taking note of tales or information which might motive psychological disturbance
– consuming dry, stale, putrefied and really wet meals
– going out of the home
– staying in vacant homes
– visiting or staying close to bushes of worship
– going to or staying in crematorium,
– being indignant
– all actions which might give sick popularity,
– talking loudly
– all actions which might motive demise of foetus
Below said are the opposite regimens the pregnant lady must practice –

During the primary, 2nd and 3rd months of being pregnant, the pregnant lady must principally devour meals which can be –
– predominantly candy in style,
– chilly in efficiency and
– extra of liquids (liquid in consistency)
According to the opinion of a few students, under said routine must be adopted from 3rd to 6th months of being pregnant in which boiled sastika rice must be fed on with various things –
Mainly right through the 3rd month of being pregnant, the pregnant lady must devour Sastika rice boiled and ready correctly, at the side of milk.
In the fourth month of being pregnant, she must devour correctly boiled sastika rice at the side of curd.
In the 5th month of being pregnant, she must devour boiled sastika rice with milk.
In the 6th month of being pregnant, she must devour boiled sastika rice with ghee.
According to the opinion of the treatise (Sushruta), the pregnant lady must practice the under said routine –
During fourth month she must devour –
– meals added with milk and butter, at the side of
– meat of animals dwelling in wilderness like areas and
– boiled rice which supplies excitement to her thoughts,
During 6th month, she must drink some of the under said –
– ghee ready with swadamstra or
– yavagu – thick type of gruel
During 7th month, she must drink –
– ghee ready with prthakparnietc herbs via the intake of which the foetus turns into happy
During the 8th month, the doctor must administer Kashaya vasti i.e. decoction enemas with decoction of Badara – jujube fruit added with under said substances –
Paste of –
– Bala – Sida cordifolia
– Atibala
– Satapushpa
– Palala – meat
Below said substances must be added –
– Milk
– Dadhimastu – whey
– Oil
– Salt
– Madanaphala – Randia dumetorum
– Honey and
– Ghee
Benefits –
The enema ready with the above-mentioned substances bestows the under said advantages –
– Removes outdated faeces which is stagnant within the frame (colon)
– Creates downward motion of Vata
Anuvasana Vasti –
After having administered Asthapana / Niruha Vasti, the pregnant lady must be administered with Anuvasana Vasti i.e. unctuous / lubricating enema. For this function, oil processed with milk and herbs of candy style must be used.

After this, she must be administered with the under said meals till transport –

In the 9th month,

Sutikagara must had been built at the land having the under said forms of soil –
– White coloured soil for Brahmanas
– Red coloured soil for Ksatriyas
– Yellow coloured soil for Vaisyas
– Black coloured soil for Sudras
The Sutikagara must be constructed with the woods of the under said bushes –
– Bilva – Aegle marmelos
– Nyagrodha –
– Tinduka – or
– Bhallataka – Semecarpus anacardium
It must even be provided with –
– Cots – as many as required which can be ready from the wooden of Bilva and so forth bushes said above
– Well plastered partitions
– Well made walls
– Doors going through east or south which is 8 palms in duration and 4 arm in breadth i.e. 12×6 ft

Prajāyinī – girl in labour / parturient lady

तत्रोपस्थितप्रसवायाःकटीपृष्ठंप्रतिसमन्ताद्वेदनाभवत्यभीक्ष्णंपुरीषप्रवृत्तिर्मूत्रंप्रसिच्यतेयोनिमुखाच्छ्लेष्माच॥७॥

अथास्याविशिखान्तरमनुलोममनुसुखमभ्यज्यानुब्रूयाच्चैतामेका – सुभगेप्रवाहस्वेति,नचाप्राप्तावीप्रवाहस्व,ततोविमुक्तेगर्भनाडीप्रबन्धेसशूलेषुश्रोणिवङ्क्षणबस्तिशिरःसुचप्रवाहेथाःशनैःशनैः,ततोगर्भनिर्गमेप्रगाढं,ततोगर्भेयोनिमुखंप्रपन्नेगाढतरमाविशल्यभावात्;अकालप्रवाहणादधिरंमूकंकुब्जंव्यस्तहनुमूर्ध्वाभिघातिनंकासश्वासशोषोद्भुतंविकटंवाजनयति॥९॥

– Auspicious rites
– Hear hymns of benediction
– Have a lot of youngsters round her,

Janana sahāya, manipulation for easy delivery
तत्रप्रतिलोममनुलोमयेत्,प्राञ्जलमाकर्षेत्॥१०॥
If the foetus has been wrongly positioned, the following steps should be taken –
– If it is placed with its head up i.e. upward, it should be brought downward
– If it is bent downward, it shall be pulled out gently
गर्भसनेतु योनिंधूपयेत्कृष्णसर्पनिर्मोकेणपिण्डीतकेनवा,बध्नीयाद्धिरण्यपुष्पीमूलंहस्तपादयोः,धारयेत्सुवर्चलांविशल्यांवा॥११॥
In case of foetal obstruction, the below mentioned measures should be done –
– The woman’s vagina must be fumigated with fumes of black cobra peel or pinditaka (madanaphala)
– Hiranyapuspi / Kalihari root is tied round her palms and ft
– She must be made to put on Suvarchala or Visalya as amulets on her frame
Prasavottara karma – post-delivery actions
अथजातस्योल्बंमुखंचसैन्धवसर्पिषाविशोध्य,घृताक्तंमूर्ध्निपिचुंदद्यात्;ततोनाभिनाडीमष्टाङ्गुलमायम्यसूत्रेणबद्ध्वाछेदयेत्,तत्सूत्रैकदेशंचकुमारस्यग्रीवायांसम्यग्बध्नीयात्॥१२॥
Below said measures must be performed after the childbirth –
– Saindhava lavana i.e. rock salt and ghee combined in combination must be used to transparent the ulba – vernix caseosa and mouth of the kid
– Ghee smeared cotton swab must be stored at the best of the pinnacle of the kid

तस्मात्प्रथमेऽह्निमधुसर्पिरनन्तमिश्रंमन्त्रपूतंत्रिकालंपाययेत्,द्वितीयेलक्ष्मणासिद्धंसर्पिः,तृतीयेच;ततःप्राङ्निवारितस्तन्यंमधुसर्पिःस्वपाणितलसंमितंद्विकालंपाययेत्॥१५॥

Below said measures must be undertaken relating to the lady who has delivered the kid –
– Body must be anointed with Bala Taila
– Decoction ready with vata mitigating herbs must be given to drink
– Powder of Pippali, pippalimula, hastipippali, chitraka and srngavera combined with answer of jaggery and made heat must be given to lick to expel the residue morbid doshas particularly vitiated blood, for 2 to a few days or till the doshas stay within (till it’s expelled).
– Yavagu ready from the Vidarigandhadi Gana crew of herbs must be given to drink added with ghee or milk, after the morbid doshas are expelled. This must be given for 3 days.
– Boiled rice must be given for intake after this. It must be given at the side of soup of Yava, kola and kulattha and soup ready with meat of animals and birds dwelling in desert-like areas. It must be given after having regarded as her energy and digestive energy.
– In this manner, the lady adhering to the above-mentioned routine of meals and heading off the contraindicated actions will get the title of Sutika i.e. lady in puerperium, for a length of 1 and part months. She will undergo the similar title till her subsequent menstrual glide seems.

– uttarabasti(vaginal douche) ready with the similar medication and oil of siddhārthaka must be administered; or
– it (placenta) must be pulled out via the hand being lubricated and nails reduce shut
Makkalla – puerperal ache / sepsis
