Theroux introduced up the documentary second at the podcast, asking Penn if he remembered what his ex-wife has mentioned about him. 

“I remember what she said,” Penn showed, including the singer used to be “very sweet”.

“She’s been a good friend for a lot of years,” the actor persisted.

“It didn’t take us long to realise that we had mistaken a good first date for a wedding partner,” he mentioned, prompting a giggle from Theroux.

“And it didn’t take us long to recover after we got divorced, maybe a year, in a friendship.”

Penn mentioned he had “a lot of fond memories of it”, including “it’s not all jail”.

Penn and Madonna first met in 1985 whilst filming the singer’s tune video, Material Girl.

The couple married six months in a while Madonna’s 27th birthday.
